Colorful Columbine Glass Vase

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gather Supplies:

FolkArt Enamels:

Berry Wine
Fresh Foliage
School Bus Yellow
Thicket
Wicker White

FolkArt One Stroke Brushes:

Flat sizes #6, 1/2", and 3/4"
Script Liner Size #2

Other Supplies:
FolkArt Clear Medium 4035

Surface to Paint:
Clear glass cylindrical vase, 8" high x 4" diameter

 Prepare Surface:
Wash and dry the vase and remove all stickers and glue residue. Wipe surface with Rubbing Alcohol, allow to dry.
Try not to touch the surface area that is to be painted. Oils from the skin could affect the paints' adhesion.
(Use a Lazy Susan if you have one, this helps to move the glass around without touching it with your fingers.)
If you make a mistake, just wipe it off with your fingers and repaint.

Paint the Design:

Columbines:

1. Double load the 1/2" flat brush with Berry Wine and Wicker White. Allow Berry Wine to be the dominant color by loading a touch more of it than the Wicker White. Paint the long spiky petals at the base of the blossoms. Start the stroke with the flat side of the brush, apply a touch of pressure, then slide while turning to end on the chisel edge to make the point.

2. Using the same brush, colors, and method of stroke, paint the bud.

3. Double load the 1/2" flat brush with Wicker White and Berry Wine. Using the flat side of the brush and keeping Berry Wine to the outer edge, paint the triangular shaped petals. Come up to the chisel edge at the point to make a nice tip for the petals.

4. Load the #6 flat brush with Wicker White, Sideload a touch of Berry Wine by stroking next to the puddle of paint and allowing the tips of the bristles on one corner to touch the puddle of paint. Using the flat side of the brush and keeping Wicker White to the outer edge, paint the center shell-shaped petals.

5. Using the same brush and colors but staying on the chisel edge and leading with the Berry Wine side of the brush, pull little chisel edge strokes out from the centers of the flowers.

6. Dip the handle end of the #6 flat brush into the puddle of School Bus Yellow and dot the centers of the flowers.

Leaves, Stems & Signature:

1. Double load the 3/4" flat brush with Thicket and Fresh Foliage. Allow Fresh Foliage to be the dominant color, then add a touch of Clear Medium and blend well to soften. Using the flat side of the brush, paint the long one-stroke leaves. Lift back to the chisel edge and slide a little to make a nice tip.

2. Using the same brush and colors, pull a stem into each leaf as soon as you finish painting it. Stay on the chisel edge and lead with Fresh Foliage. Pull a stem from each of the flowers, too. Do not wash this brush yet.

3. Load the #6 flat brush with Fresh Foliage. Add a touch of Thicket to the one corner of the brush. Using the flat side of the brush, paint long thin one-stroke leaves (sepals) to make the base (calyx) for the bud.

4. Using the 3/4" flat brush again that is still loaded from step 2, pull a stem from the bud. Stay on the chisel edge and lead with the Fresh Foliage side of the brush.

5. Sign your name using the #2 script liner loaded with any color of paint thinned slightly with Clear Medium.

6 Finish

  • Air-dry for 21 days to cure or bake for added durability.
  • Top-shelf dishwasher safe.
